| Nguyen Xuan Trung migrated from Vietnam to the United States in 1971. As a student in Fine Arts, he majored in Sculpture and Graphic Design. A graphic designer by profession for the last twenty-five years, he recently experimented with pencils and paintbrushes as a hobby in his spare time. Nguyen finds inspirations for his work in Vietnamese music and literature. His very first painting was based on the classical poem Chinh Phu Ngam - the Chant of the Warrior's Wife. He plans to borrow Trinh Cong Son's Biet Dau Nguon Coi in his future painting project. |
 | Ballad of A Warrior's Wife: This started in 1988 with a book cover image and collateral pieces for the world premiere performance of Cung Tien's Ballad of A Warrior's Wife in San Jose, California. This suite of musical ballads, based on a Vietnamese poem of the same title, is written for a small chamber ensemble . It is about a woman grieving for her missing husband who went away to war. With the book cover as a preamble, Nguyen later completed a portrait to convey the mood of the following stanza in this Vietnamese poem: Since you left for the realm of wind and sand, where are you resting on this moonlit night? |
